Aquaculture ponds receive
relatively large amounts of organic and inorganic nitrogen inputs. Fish and
shrimp assimilate about 20-25% of protein fed into their body and the rest is
released to the pond as ammonia and organic nitrogen. In intensive aqua farming accumulation of unutilised feed,
organic waste, dead algae increases load in the pond bottom, absorbing all the
available oxygen thus creating anaerobic condition. In the absence of oxygen,
noxious gases like H2S, NH3 and NO2 become more stable levels causing stress to
the cultured species. Ammonia affects the central nervous system causing
loss of equilibrium and in extreme cases it leads to death. Additionally
ammonia increases the susceptibility of aquatic animals to infectious and
non-infectious diseases. This
ultimately leads to severe health problems and mortality in absence of
corrective measures.
In
nature microbes play a major role in nutrient recycling to enhance natural
productivity and maintain water quality. Toxic forms of nitrogen viz. ammonia
and nitrite are converted to nitrate and nitrogen gas through microbes involved
in nitrogen cycle mainly through nitrification and denitrification processes.
Nitrification is the process of biological oxidation of ammonia to nitrite
followed by the oxidation of nitrite to nitrate. Nitrification involves two
group of bacteria namely ammonia oxidizers (Nitrosomonas spp. and
Nitrosococcusspp) and nitrite oxidizers (Nitrobacter spp., and Nitrospiraspp).
Denitrification is a respiratory process, carried out by heterotrophic bacteria
in which nitrate (NO3) and nitrite (NO2) are converted into gaseous nitrogen
intermediates viz. nitric oxide (NO), nitrous oxide (N2O) and finally nitrogen
(N2). The conversion reactions are very delicate and can be inhibited by high
concentrations of organic ammonia and inappropriate PH.
Pool
Fix contains blend of selective organisms known for their ability to stabilize the conversion process and to
tolerate conditions of the pond. Pool Fix prevents ammonia build up, removes phosphorus,
nitrogen compounds added to the pond water by shrimp faeces, unutilised food,
dead algae and organic bottom sludge materials.
Ammonia oxidizing bacteria (AOB), nitrite oxidizing bacteria (NOB) and denitrifying bacteria (DNB)
500 gm per 1 acre once a week. Dosage can be altered depending on pond condition or as directed by Aqua consultant Application: Mix the required quantity of Pool Fix with sand or Water and spread over the pond
Storage: Keep in a cool and dry place
